Further details about the role

The Business and Economics department has four experienced specialist teachers. The teachers are passionate about Business and Economics and believe that learning should be engaging and fun. Our lessons are challenging and varied, with high standards of teaching and learning, and we support each other, sharing ideas and resources. The department has four well-equipped modern classrooms and a modern staff office. We make good use of practical work and the school’s excellent ICT resources to support imaginative and innovative teaching.

In Business over 130 Year 11 students currently follow the Edexcel GCSE specification. Achievement is very high; in the recent 2023 A level examinations 76% of 41 students have achieved A*- C. In Year 13 there are currently 21 students studying Business A level and 30 studying Economics. Almost all A-Level Business and Economics students continue to University, many studying business related degrees.

The Business and Economics department is a hugely successful and popular department within the school which enjoys high take up at GCSE and A level. Results in public examinations are good and improving and the drive and dedication of all members of the business and economics team is evident. Students can choose Business as an option at GCSE and both Business and Economics at A level. Take up at both GCSE and A level is impressive, with the figures above demonstrating the good number of students opting to study in one (or often both) of these subjects. In addition to the academic curriculum our students benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including visits to London and New York.

Typical achievement is excellent. Last year’s results of 81% 9-7 or 64% 9-8 (GCSE Business), 56% A* - B (A Level Business 58% A*-B (A Level Economics). The department is always looking at ways of developing its curriculum and widening the experience for students so expert subject knowledge and a passion to lead extra-curricular activities in Business and Economics are highly desirable. We take great pride in providing our students with a first class education and believe that commitment, attitude, ideas, potential and enthusiasm are very important qualities.

Consideration will be given to both experienced teachers and ECT’s who wish to develop their teaching expertise in an outstanding school.

For the Business and Economics department at Heckmondwike, commitment, a positive attitude, ideas, potential and enthusiasm are important qualities.

We are delighted to have been named “Secondary School Of The Year”, “Soaring 57 places in the UK rankings to 77” out of approx 6000 secondary schools (state and independent) in the latest Sunday Times Parent Power Guide.

And for the second year running we are ranked No 2 in the North of England.

This is a fabulous accolade to the whole school community and just reward for years of hard work from staff, students and indeed parents.
The survey includes both GCSE and A level results and is nationally noted as a true measure of school performance using metrics of most interest to parents when selecting a school.

“Such accolades are very pleasing and we are delighted to be recognised, but they only come about because of the week in week out hard work from students and staff and I salute my colleagues and students, they are an exceptional team.” Mr Roberts, Headteacher.

Heckmondwike Grammar School is a unique school, with students who are eager to learn, keen to know more and want to enjoy their educational experiences. It is exceptional in many ways: a very diverse school community that produces results of the highest quality. We work effectively with our young people, really care about them and their futures and have an ultimate success measure of enabling them to proceed to where they want to go. Excellent relationships between staff and students are the norm, expectations are high and students perform very well as a consequence.
